Key Highlights

1) Developed a new product combining an everyday ceramic mug with an integrated electronic music box

2) Solved compatibility and sound-quality issues through electronics engineering analysis and multiple rounds of testing

3) Redesigned the silicone retention ring to improve long-term stability of the music box

4) Product engineered to remain safe for everyday use, compatible with dishwasher and microwave

Thank SVI for turning a challenging product concept into a workable items. Their engineering support and hands-on coordination with suppliers helped solve issues that could have delayed the launch.

A U.S.-based consumer brand serving major retailers in the United States, Australia, and Canada approached SVI to develop a new type of ceramic mug that combined everyday tableware with an electronic music box.

The concept was more complex than a conventional ceramic mug because the electronic component had to be integrated into the bottom of the product without affecting normal use.

The client had a specific requirement for the mug’s size and capacity, while the music box needed to remain compact enough to fit within the available space. At the same time, the finished product had to maintain reliable electronic performance and remain practical for everyday use.

Based on the design concept, SVI successfully created such a product and completed the production on time, meeting the market launch schedule.

What Were the Challenges

Developing a hybrid product across two unrelated manufacturing categories created technical and commercial risks:

What SVI Global Take to Solve the Challenges

We approached this as a product engineering challenge as much as a sourcing one — bringing in our internal electronics engineering team from the early stages to work directly alongside the factory.

1. Dual-category supplier search & audit

Screened multiple factories across both ceramic mug manufacturing and music box electronics. Shortlisted and audited suitable suppliers within 4 weeks — assessing production capability, quality systems, and capacity to handle a technically complex new product. Only compliant, audited factories were onboarded.

2. Product structure engineering

After receiving the client’s design concept, convened an internal meeting with our engineering team to map out the structural requirements. Two core problems were defined and addressed:

How to mechanically secure the music box to the base of the mug without affecting the mug’s form or usability

How to design the interface between the mug and the music box so that dishwasher and microwave compatibility was preserved — a non-negotiable requirement for a retail tableware product

3. Audio quality issue resolution

During sample development, the music box produced substandard sound quality. Our electronics engineering team disassembled the unit, identified the root cause — the speaker and internal components had been miniaturised to their smallest feasible size to fit within the mug base, leaving insufficient capacity for adequate audio output. The team advised the factory on specific corrective actions: adding capacitors and increasing IC capacity. Revised samples were received and put through multiple rounds of testing before sign-off.

4. Silicone ring failure resolution

The silicone ring securing the music box to the mug base was found to lose its hold over time. Working with the engineering team, we identified the root cause: once the music box is sealed inside the mug base, an air pressure differential develops between the interior and exterior, gradually weakening the silicone’s grip. We redesigned the material composition and structural geometry of the silicone ring to compensate for this pressure effect — and validated the fix through multiple sample iterations and stress tests before approving it for production.

5. Sample coordination & revision management

Managed multiple rounds of sample revision across both the ceramic and electronics suppliers — maintaining alignment between the two factories on fit, timing, and specification changes at each iteration.

6. Packaging review

Reviewed the packaging structure to ensure it met both retail presentation standards and the protection requirements for a product combining fragile ceramics with embedded electronics.
